![]() There is no malware that I am aware that would allow remote access and control of the machine. I would guess that someone is doing that, and it would have to be someone that has access to their machine. Second, and this is from someone who has been supporting over a thousand Macs since the late 80s, a past Apple Product Professional and Apple Support Expert, I have never heard of such a thing as desktop icons randomly (you said this happens frequently, though not always) rearranging themselves into the patterns you describe. If it is capable of running 10.9, go through the pain and upgrade them (upgrade their RAM to the maximum while you're at it). if none of this fixes the issues then by all means take it to apple.įirst, why is their machine running a deprecated OS? It should at least be running 10.6.8. These things are relatively easy to do and are things they can try before sending it away to be looked at. they need to have their fingers on before the first chime. They have to be fast to get their fingers on to do this but if they miss they can try again. They could also reset their pram by turning off the computer and then hit the start button and get their fingers on option/command.p/r keys and keep them there for 3 startup chimes. I'd get them to install this and have a go as well. There is Sophos for 10.5 and it can be accessed on this page http:/ / en-us/ products/ free-tools/ sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition/ download.aspx it is the lower one listed as you can see. If they click on the harddrive on the left (their computer) they can select repair and run verify and repair permissions. they can in the Applications folder get to the Utilities Folder and open Disk Utility. There are things they can do for themselves. Have you checked that all installed apps are compatible with the OS / bit size īut if you could add details of what you HAVE tried / found please What would a typical days surfing include ? - are you able to determine just what sites are visited, as if they are hitting a known bad guy, it may narrow down the search for malware - if it IS malwareĪre you able to do a basic clean and clear of asset - in windows assets, I like to defrag / run Ccleaner / check page file is set to be 3x size of installed RAM as a start AND end value and so on, to make sure that all the assets I work woith have a level playing field as it were Is it a stand alone home based ONLY asset ? When was the last tiem it worked PROPERLY ?Ĭan you access asset logs to determine if there is anything 'not quite right' in there, especially it it coincides with slow down sunday's ?Ĭan you create a NEW profile, and log on as that, does the same issue follow across ? I'm no Apple guy either, but there has to be some convergance on trouble shooting to ascertain just where the asset in question began to degrade They're not running any windows compatability programs so I doubt those were the cause of the problem. It found a few Windows virus executables (which I removed), but nothing else. I initially suspected some malware had gotten installed, so I downloaded, installed & ran clamxav. She told me that sometimes some of her emails or files get deleted, though I suspect that may just be one or the other of them doing that accidentally. Their ISP stated that there hasn't been any unusual activity coming from their IP address. Apparently on Sundays it is almost unusable. The other thing going on is that the computer gets extremely slow at certain times. It seems like someone has gotten control over the machine & is just messing with them, but it only happens when the machine has been turned off. They've found them rearranged in various patterns including "V", "X", "+", circles, triangles, squares, & more. Normally my father-in-law's icons are on the left & my mother-in-law's icons are on the right. My in-law's computer is exhibiting some strange behavior, unfortunately it's a Mac (running OS X 10.5.8) & I don't have much experience with Macs so I hoping to get some additional opinions about what could be going on.įrequently, when they turn on the computer, the icons on the desktop are re-arranged oddly.
